Our Birth Story
In January of 2024 my wife and I were surprised to find out that we were expecting baby number three. There was a lot of shock and excitement as we knew this meant we would have three kids under the age of three.
We experienced many trials throughout the first trimester. But finally around twenty weeks we started to have hope that everything was going to be fine. However shortly after that, my wife began to have heavy bleeding and cramping episodes. These episodes would last for a few hours and then they would disappear for a few days, then it would start all over again. This continued off and on for about two weeks. Every doctor said her and the baby were perfectly healthy and each checkup we had came back with inconclusive results. We had been to three different hospitals and seen four different doctors at this point. So with no answers, the bleeding continued.
On June, 08, 2024 the bleeding had become unmanageable. I rushed my wife who was twenty-three weeks pregnant, to the IMC labor and delivery. They quickly diagnosed her with a placental abruption and feared that the amount of blood she had lost over the last two weeks could be life threatening. We were told that the only way to stop the bleeding would be to remove the placenta as quickly as possible. This meant our baby would be born at twenty-three weeks with a low chance of survival or possibly be stillborn.
Before we knew it our baby was here. A girl! She was perfect. We were over the moon to know we were proud parents of three little girls. We held her tightly in our arms for the entire hour that she lived. Time seemed to slow down and go by too quickly all at the same time.
A few days later and we were finally released from the hospital. As we left the hospital empty handed our reality began to set it. We had an appointment at the funeral home that day to get everything done as quickly as possible. My wife insisted that we go to the store before our appointment and pick out a baby blanket to place in her casket. She always bought our babies a new blanket to take them home in from the hospital, so she knew that it wouldn’t feel right if we didn’t get one for her too.
As we looked around the store, a young girl approached us and asked if she could help us with anything. We told her our story and word spread quickly throughout the staff. We wanted a blanket covered in roses to represent her birth month and the color pink to make it extra girly. As we found the perfect blanket, the staff informed us that they would be donating the blanket to us and included a matching adult sized blanket for my wife to have. This act of kindness was completely unexpected and brought us to tears. It is a moment that filled us with warmth and light in our darkest hour.
My wife continues to sleep with that blanket every single night that she goes to sleep. She says “Nothing with ever replace the feeling of holding your baby in your arms, but having a matching blanket to hold tight each night and know that my baby is laying peacefully on the same one, gives me a sense of holding onto each other forever.”
Now our hope is to give other mothers that sense of holding onto each other forever with their own matching blankets.
